I am a former collegiate football player (offensive lineman) who took up running to lose weight, and in the process I have become addicted! I started running at 290 lbs.  I am married and we are expecting our first child in September 2014.

Got out, and still took it easy.  Decided to push it for the first bit and see how it felt.  Everything felt good and I was able to average about 7:20 before I cooled down.  Looking forward to getting back at it next week.

AM: I'm back! At least after this run it sure feels that way.  The IT band felt a bit tight but loosened up all the way during the run, and was pain free.  The first 4 miles were with my wife @ her pace, that helped me take it easy.  Then the last 2.25 I picked up the pace.  The first mile @ 7:10, the second I slowed quite a bit and finished in 7:42.  It didn't have anything to do with the legs, just the fact that the lungs weren't used to the work! Then I took it super easy the last .25. 

PM: a bit stiff, but not bad at all!! Love the double digit day!

AM: a bit stiff this morning, maybe I'm not back like I thought I was.  No pain, just stiffness . . . I'm going to wait and see how I feel this afternoon.

 Too tired and soar to get back out again tonight.  I'm really starting to worry about st george :(

AM: as big of a baby as I was yesterday, today I was determined to be tough, but I didn't need to be!!! ZERO PAIN this morning!!  first 2.75 I took it easy, then kicked it up a bit.  First 2.75 was @ 8:35 then the last 1.25 @ 7:25.  Everything started to feel really smooth at the end.

PM: DOUBLE ZERO PAIN!!  Went way better than expected!  It was my first real day of doubles in a while.  Did a loop around the hood.  With some NICE hills in it!  Avg pace was 8:19, and I pushed a little over a mile @ 7:39.  Nice stretch after, and with some ice and stem tonight I will be ready to go!

Sore, stressed and tired I woke up this morning with ZERO motivation to even show up at this race.  But I had to see how my body would react . . . . the situation today basically simulated what it is going to be like to race st george, if I make it.  

Anyways, wanted a big warm up today because I needed some miles.  Woke up at 6, went through my routine and got up to the race LONG before the start.  I ran on the road the race was on, up by the capitol and through memory grove for 5.25 miles.

At the start of the race is when I first started to feel the competitive juices get moving, but having just run the course I new that I couldn't go out too fast.  The first part of the race was uphill, even though it looks downhill, and it was into a strong head-wind.  So I took it pretty easy for the first mile and ran it in 7:19, the next mile was also up hill, but the wind was at our backs, so I was able to push it a bit more but was still holding back 7:06.  Mile 3 I turned it on down-hill with a tail-wind and ran it in 6:21, with the last .1 taking 37 sec.

Overall I was pretty happy that everything went well during the race, with no pain and feeling good.  The only problem was that I probably would have pr'd if I had run hard the whole way, oh well.

Then after the race is when the real negatives set in as I went on my 2.25 cool down run.  Simply put, the IT band tightened up, and is really bothering me.

Pretty good run this evening.  First 5 were with my amazing wife, at her pace.  She really is pretty good at cruising along, especially considering that she doesn't run very consistently. She trucked right through those miles.  Then I went back out for about 3 miles a bit more up tempo.  My avg pace was 8:12, everything felt pretty darn good!

Sad news . . . . Not just because of my little ITB setback, but because of some poor college student problems I won't make it to St G this year.  It kind of sucks to have to make that decision, but we can't afford to go down there and have me run an average race . . . . it sucks!  Only way it could change is with a milagro!

AM: Nice bit of tempo today, wanted the effort to be kind of hard.  Warmed up 1 @ 8:55, then the fun began.  First 2 right  @7:41, then the next 1 @7:13, next 1.25 @ 6:58, then back to 7:41 until I hit 8 miles total.  At the 8 mile mark I cooled down @ 10 min until I hit the end of my 65 min workout.

I don't know what got into me today! Two straight days of tempo, but today's was a lot easier with about 5.5 of it being down hill, still a good pace. 7:31, 7:15, 7:39, 7:22, 7:10, 7:24, 7:35, 7:26, with a slow cool down. ITB feeling strong

The hardest 10k course ever invented!!  It was pretty ridiculous, and was made worse by the crazy winds!  I hung on as long as I could, but kind of faded at the end after working so hard on all the hills. Warmed up with 3 miles then cooled down with 1.

First mile was 6:40 and was by far the easiest mile on the course, I trucked right through it, then the next mile was all up hill @ 7:19ish, I thought that this would be the end of the up hill but it wasn't!!  I can't remember the rest of the splits right now without my watch but it was pretty rough going.  Up hill and downhill all with a nasty wind!

Got to talk to some other bloggers that ran the race; misimona and aunker.  It is always good to chat with others!!  Anyways, I hope the Utes win the real rivalry tonight

So the goal was for 10 solid, but not super hard miles.  I definitely achieved that, and feel really good about this effort.  I put them all as slow miles because that's how the effort felt, but the splits show that it was a bit faster than my effort felt, which is obviously a good thing.  The first 2.3 were en route to the fitness center, where I did 6 on the treadmill followed by 2 miles back home.  Splits were:8:11, 7:50, 2:14, all 6 on the tread @ 8:00 then 7:51, 7:53 up the hill back home.  AVG PACE 7:57

Well, tonight I wanted to get out for an hour, and I really had no expectations other than being out and trying to relax.  As I got started I thought that I would probably end up running just shy of 7 miles, so I planned my route accordingly.  I started running up hill, and just settled into a pace that was easy.  When I looked down at my watch around the 1 mile mark and saw that I was around an 8 min mile I was surprised.  I decided to not slow too much, but just continued to stay comfortable, and keep the effort even.  The splits ended up being pretty good, and overall I was surprised by how easy it was, especially with some serious climbs. Splits were; 8:08 (hill), 8:05, 7:42, 7:41, 7:50, 7:47 (hill), 7:50 (hill), 7:35, :05.  I actually felt better up hill than I did down hill. AVG PACE 7:50

As I take a step back and look at my last year it is incredible to me how far I have come.  A year ago last Saturday I never would have dreamed that  an 8 mile run @ 7:50 would have been easy.  I had just completed my first marathon (TOU) in 4:58!!  It truly is incredible what I have been blessed to be able to accomplish.  Even though I have had a few setbacks, I have still made tremendous strides, and can only hope that with hard work and determination those strides will continue.

The plan for the rest of coaching season is to run for 1 hour every day, no matter what the pace is, with a long run on Saturday's of at least 1.5 hrs.  Anyways, today was the start of that plan, and it went good.

 7.6 miles in the 1 hour.  1.6 @ 5k pace, and everything felt pretty good.  No hammy or ITB pain.

Got out for my 1 hr run.  Everything felt good tonight, but that is probably because I took it pretty easy. AVG PACE 8:46.  If I can stick with this plan I should be able to jump into a more serious training program fairly easily after football.

6 super easy miles.  I ran with my wife for 3.8 miles at her pace, then ran the last 2.2 by myself at a pretty easy pace.  Stuck with my 1 hour a day plan.

Nice wind down run before the big rivalry game.  A bit of soreness in my left Achilles was bothersome, but nothing too bad.  It was a beautiful day for a run.  Plus we got the big rivalry and region win!
