AM: This morning the goal was to prove to myself that I can still run fast.  The reasoning behind this was that I wanted a mental edge going into the 5k on Wednesday.  Anyways, I started off a bit slow for the first .25, but then decided to open it up a bit.  The next 1.75 was at a tough (but not a max) effort of a 7:17 average pace.  Then I did a loop around the fitness center, and when I got to the corner of 3100 and 5600 I decided I was going to sprint up to 3500.  I started out at about a 6:20 pace for the first .25, and as the incline got a bit steeper, my pace started to gradually climb, and my average pace for the .5 ended up being 7:10.  Then I cooled off the last mile home.  It really felt good to get my legs turning over a bit.  I am looking forward to seeing how my legs react to the faster pace of this mornings run during my longer run this afternoon.  Avg pace was 8:18.

PM: The legs felt really good this afternoon! First three miles on the outdoor trail at the fitness center with my wife at her pace.  After we finished up her run I hopped on the treadmill inside for 5.5 miles.  Splits were 8:34, 8:27, 8:00, 7:30, 7:55, 8:55 for the last .5.  After the treadmill run I hurried outside and ran home thinking that it was about 1.5, but it ended up being 2 on the dot.  These 2 miles were up hill and I didn't push the pace much.  My splits were 8:47 and 8:52.  Overall a solid end to a solid day of work.

PM: A nice easy shakeout run, getting ready for tomorrow's race.  I think I am more nervous for this 5k than I have been for all of my long races.  The reason being that I don't like the hurt very much, but I know it is important for my development as a runner.  So I hope that everything goes well, and I run a good time.  The course is pretty honest, first 1.25 pretty steep uphill, the next 1.25 down hill and the last .6 is flat.  Should be a solid test of my fitness level.

What an interesting race :)  I new going into it that I shouldn't expect much, other than a good chance to compete in a lower tear race, which is exactly what I needed.  We got out the door at about 5:55 this morning to be there in time to register, and to get our rockin' cool t-shirts! After we got all signed up I went for a nice 2 mile warm-up then a good solid stretch.

At about 6:45 everyone started shuffling to the start line, and they acted like they were ready to start, so we got over there just to make sure that they didn't start without us.  There was no official start line, in fact we just kind of stood around a general area and then all of a sudden a girl with a walkie-talkie looks at me and very calmly says, "go".  I look at her puzzled and say, "The race is starting?" She nodded so I took off. (this was the first indication that the course hadn't really been measured)

I started really strong, and actually led the race for the first .5.  After that little jaunt the course turned uphill and I got passed by 3 young guys.  I felt pretty strong and wasn't losing any ground or gaining any ground on the 3 guys in front of me.  After the uphill there was about .25 of downhill before an even steeper uphill.  This is where I got passed by Ragnar shirt, this might be the most upset I was all day ;).

After  another .5 of uphill we started to flatten out and get to the down hill part.  This is where I started to get a bit frustrated . . . . We pass the 1 mile mark and I look down at my watch and it says we have already gone 1.6 miles.  WHAT THE HECK!! My watch has been off before, but never by that much!  So I start planning for a 4.5 mile race instead of 3.1 and I actually pulled off the throttle a bit (which was a huge mistake) I justified it because the kid in front of me was about .25 ahead of me, and no one was even close behind me.

When we hit the "2 mile" mark my watch was a little closer at 2.4, so I started to pick it up again, but wasn't getting the kick I needed.  I cruised in the rest of the way and the course only ended up being long by .15 registering at 3.25 on everybody's watches. My unofficial 5k split was 22:06

Overall it was a good experience for me to be near the front of a race, and to get some good speed work in, even if it wasn't as fast as I wanted it to be.  After the race my cousin and I ran back to get the cars and then I continued on for a bit longer finishing the morning with just over 9 miles.

AM: After the most rocking 4th of July party ever I couldn't get my lazy butt out of bed!  The Beach Boys and Scotty McCreery were just too much for me to handle ;)

PM:  After having partially recovered from last night, and enjoying a field trip at work hiking around Red Butte Gardens and checking out The Museum of Natural History I got my butt out the door and enjoyed a nice run in the summer rain!  I got out of the gates feeling pretty good, and decided I was going to do a marathon pace tempo run even though I had no idea how long I would keep it up.  The first mile was a bit slow, but after that they were all pretty solid.  After a while I decided I would do 8 miles tempo, and then just keep a nice steady pace the rest of the way back.  The splits were 8:30, 7:52, 7:39, 7:48, 7:47, 7:43, 7:51, 7:57 The tempo went pretty well, but I ran out of gas a bit at the end because I stretched it out a lot longer than I had planned. I wish that I was a bit stronger mentally to push through to the end, but I know that will come with better training.  The rest of the splits were 8:56, 8:57, 8:53, 9:02, 8:45, 8:50, 8:57, 2:45 really taking it easy the last .25.  Overall average pace was 8:25.

AM: A nice easy shakeout run.  First 3.25 with my wife, and then 2 miles by myself to finish up.  My legs had no go today, so my focus was to just get through it and to get them feeling better.  Hope that my run in the mountains of Idaho tonight goes well.  Looking forward to a few trail runs to finish out the week!

PM: 6 trail miles.  Hard work, but at an easy pace.  Got lost once, but only for a minute.  The only complaint is that it was really dusty.

I was dreading this run all night.  I didn't sleep well, which is normal for sleeping in a tent without an air mattress. I don't know how I did it, but I drug myself out of the tent and before I new it I was running.  I went the first 5 miles down the road at a really easy pace, but the whole way all I could think about was how I was dreading going back up 5 miles of uphill.  I gutted it up, and ended up with a decent pace going back up the hill.  Especially considering the poor nights sleep, and the dead legs at the end of the week.

After the run we had a fun filled day of fishing, floating the river in Lava Hot Springs, as well as sitting in the hot springs.  Pretty eventful day, but I wish the run had been a bit more enjoyable.

AM:  Today was a nice morning loop, and I decided that I am going to call it the checkered water tower loop.

This week I am going to have to shake up my routine a bit because football practice, and I won't have as much time for my afternoon run, so that means more miles in the morning! So I started the day off with 8.25.  The first 2.75 miles are up 5600 W, and today it was into a stiff head-wind.  I got through them, and then decided to pick up the tempo for a while on the flats and down-hill.  Splits were; 9:22, 8:57, 9:04, 7:51, 7:39, 7:52, 8:06 (this is the mile that I got attacked by a dog, and had to slow down.  I was cruising and actually would have had my fastest split this mile if I wouldn't have had to pull out the kung-fu)  8:59, 2:12.  AVG PACE 8:30

PM: 5 miles on the treadmill.  Really boring . . . 8:34 even splits the WHOLE way.  The whole time I was dreading going to football.  It was very hot outside, and practice didn't go very smooth.  Hopefully tomorrow is much better on all fronts!

AM: Before I started the run I was stretching and I hear footsteps and look up to find a DEER in the middle of our circle, SO CRAZY!! Anyways . . . . 10 miles on the button, I am going to name this run "The Beast Ridge Loop".  Up 5600 W to 5400 S then over to USANA followed by some loops and doops closer to home.  Everything went well.  The first 4.5 was all up hill, followed by some NICE down hill.  Didn't push the tempo as much today, just tried to enjoy "beast ridge" as much as possible. Splits were; 9:33, 9:19, 9:31, 9:05, 8:33, 8:18, 8:20, 8:30, 8:28, 8:48. AVG PACE 8:51

PM: Boring treadmill run for 5 miles. 8:45 average pace.  Did .5 @ half marathon pace just for fun :) Football practice was SOOOOO HOTTTTT TODAY!!!

AM: 9.25 miles.  Ran down to the fitness center and did several loops around the outdoor track/trail.  Legs felt pretty good, not great but good.  Started off pretty slow, and gradually got faster without realizing it.   My splits were 9:02, 8:56, 8:56, 8:58, 8:44, 8:24, 8:13, 8:26, 8:36, 2:16. AVG PACE 8:43.  Looking forward to practice and running this afternoon.

PM: 4.25 super treadmill miles @ 8:46.  Legs felt really sore and tight . . . .it might have something to do with running after football practice instead of before.

Decided to do my "long" run today because I have a late night tonight and a wedding in the morning.  I got the idea for the run from Laputka, but I'm sure several of you have done it as well.  Started on top of Big Mountain at the start of the Deseret News Marathon (I think) and I ran down to the base of Emigration Canyon.  I forgot how hard the constant down hill pounding is on my legs. I don't have my exact splits for the run because I forgot to charge my Garmin, so I was using a watch without the ability to measure splits.  The good news is that using the mile markers for the marathon, and my brain, I know that my first 6 miles were all under 8 min. When I hit the hill up the backside of Little Mountain I slowed down a bit around 9 min miles up the hill, and then decided to coast down Emigration. AVG PACE: 8:31

So, today was kind of a shake out run after yesterdays run, and long long long night of football!  We were in a 7 on 7 passing tournament in Grantsville that went til 3 AM!  My linemen took 2nd place in the lineman challenge and our 7 on 7 team went undefeated!  Anyways, after all of that my legs were pretty shot so I went for a mid-afternoon run.  Nice and cool outside.  AVG PACE was 9:30.  I started off really slow, and sped up as I went.  My one little burst of speed came when I got tired of this guy leapfrogging me by sprinting and then dying, so I decided to just kick it in for a while and I ran a 7:50 pace for the .75 until I couldn't see him anymore.  Now its off to a wedding!

PM: 8 miles on the JRP. 8:30, 8:17, 8:48, 7:37, 7:08, 9:17, 8:59, 8:58.  My splits were all over the place, and at times I felt great and at times I felt weird.  It did feel great running in the rain, so that made it way enjoyable.

PM: An interesting afternoon run.  3 pretty easy miles mixed with some good tempo miles.  I wanted to get my legs moving so I ran 1 mile @ 6:09 and 1 mile @ 7:30.  They weren't back to back, so that made it seem easier than it really was.  Overall the legs felt pretty good. AVG PACE 7:56

PM: 7.5 solid miles by myself, then I met up for 3.25 miles with my wife.  The 7.5 by myself felt good, and I didn't feel like I was pushing it, but my splits were pretty good: 8:37, 7:41, 8:05, 8:15, 8:45 (SUPER UPHILL), 8:21, 8:13, 4:14.  The 3.25 with my wife were at her pace, but it was a bit tougher because of the heat. I went to bed last night feeling anxious and uncertain about this morning.  I really wasn't feeling good about it, and that made me nervous because I felt great going into the 4th of July 5k I ran.  Anyways, got up at 5:20 hopped in the shower to loosen up a bit and then headed out the door up to Draper.

Got there with plenty of time to get a good warm-up in, and got 3 easy miles, but I still wasn't feeling good.  As I was warming up I saw Allie and her husband, but I am always too chicken to say hi to fellow bloggers, so I just ran by.  As the race started I realized that even though the final time was going to be chipped the start wasn't.  When I noticed this I made sure that I hung towards the start, but I was still a good 25-30 feet back.

When the race started I did what I usually do at 5k's and ran just a bit too fast.  I looked down at the .25 mark and my pace was @ 6:00, so I dialed it back just a bit so that I wouldn't burn out completely. The first mile came in @ 6:34 which is a pace that I felt like I could maintain, so I did my best to do just that.

Mile two felt a lot better than my first mile, and I felt like I had really dialed the pace in especially when it clocked in @ 6:39.  However this was the last time I felt good :)

Mile three felt like a death march!! The sun was finally hitting us and it was all a gradual climb.  I did my best to keep my pace under 7min, but I couldn't quite do it.  luckily I heard footsteps behind me, and I wasn't about to get passed, or else this mile would have been slower.  It came in @ 7:12, and the final .1 in 33 seconds (6:36 pace), but I forgot to stop my watch for a while after I crossed the line.  My official race time was 20:55, but I took a generous 2 seconds off because of the little wait I had before the start.  I feel like my time was probably even a bit faster :)

As I crossed the finish line I knew I had pushed it because I almost threw up.  I scared a poor little girl as I dry heaved, I probably scarred her for life :)  Anyways, I was really happy with the time, and with my overall effort.  After the race I jogged around for a while and ran into Allie, this time I didn't chicken out, and said hi and chatted for a bit.  In total I got 5 miles in after the race.  I hung around because I had a hunch that I might place in my age group, and I did.  It is the first medal I have ever won in a race, it feels good to actually take something home, even if it was just a 3rd place age group medal!

Being precise with the miles this morning.  10.05 AVG PACE 8:33.  Everything felt good for a Monday at 4 AM :) I am off to pioneer trek this week, which means I am going to be pulling a handcart with my wife and a bunch of teenagers across the plains of Wyoming!! 33 miles of walking Tues-Thur :)  I will be having to force the miles this week, but I am going to get as many as I can.  The plan is to run another 10 tomorrow morning, before we start walking, then do 3 miles Wed and Thur. Friday I should be able to do 5 AM and 5 PM, and if I am feeling up to it a nice easy long run on Saturday.  If I can manage all of that I will be very happy!  Anyways, I will see you all Friday evening with a report of the week!!!

AM: 3 SLOW miles before the long trek today.  About a 9:30 pace around the "6th Crossing" campground near the sweetwater river in Wyoming.

WHOLE DAY: 14 miles of handcart pulling in the Saucony's.  My wife and I were in charge of 10 kids and 2 handcarts full of our stuff.  Our "family", as we were called, was very athletic and hardworking.  I don't know how we lucked out but we had lots of well conditioned athletes in our group. The problem was that the rest of the families weren't so lucky, and we got sent to the back so we didn't push the pace too much.  Getting sent to the back meant lots of waiting.  Someone tracked it with their Garmin and for the whole day we were stopped for 4 hr 13min!!!!! Wish we could have just walked it through.

The family continued to be studly today.  14 miles again.  This time with only 1 handcart.  We did have one of the kids in our family go into diabetic shock on the trail, and we had to rush him out in a hurry.  Me and a couple other kids pulled him out 2 miles to our first aide truck.  So I ended up with about 17 miles walking.  Not near as much stopping today, just a very hard trail up the famous "Rocky Ridge"  It was intense pulling a handcart up it.  All the miles in my saucony's again.

Well, overall I would call the run a success.  Especially considering the heat, and the long week of pulling.  The heat was all my fault because I chose to sleep in rather than get my butt out the door early.  I didn't start the run until around 9 AM.  The goal was to keep it around an 8:30 and then drop down to a 7:40 for the last 3.  I executed my goal pretty well until mile 14.  my splits were 8:56, 8:32, 8:25, 8:29, 8:33, 8:32, 8:26, 8:41, 8:32, 8:32, 8:30, 8:31, 8:40, 8:55, 8:51, 8:57, 7:55, 9:24, 9:53, 10:16

I think the reason I crashed and burned was lack of nutrition during the run combined with the heat.  I tried to kick it in at mile 17 but couldn't kick the rest of the way in.  My legs felt just fine, but my body just had no gas left in the tank.  It is very encouraging that the legs feel so good.  Overall a good learning experience today.  The avg pace was 8:47.

AM: Pretty good run on the red and white water tower loop.  Uphill into the wind for the first 3 miles, then I did kind of a marathon tempo the next three with all my splits being around 7:40.  Then I slowed down a bit to the finish. AVG PACE 8:42

PM: 6.5 miles on the JRP.  Pretty nice out with a stiff head wind coming from the south.  It is tough getting back into two-a-days, but at the same time it feels good.  It took me a couple miles for my legs to loosen up, but after they did everything went fine.  AVG PACE 8:55 (a bit slow, but I'll take it)

PM: Real easy pace on the grass around Hunter Park.  5 miles worth, which I think was 6 laps.  Pace was just over 9 min, which was just fine after my tougher effort this morning.
